A little Asian sunshine under the London rain…

This is not your regular beauty-related post…but wanted to share with you some of what I like to consider are touches of sunshine or touches of bright colors that I have scattered around my living room in an attempt to overcome London winter greys…

Am I 15, again!?

You know I like Paperchase…

About 1-2 years ago I bought a collection of stickers to use on my travel notebook. I realized the other day that this hadn’t been opened yet…

Next thing I know I’m talking to my sister about customizing my dad’s and mum’s computers (we bought them one netbook each recently! Good daughters!) so that they know which one is which…

I ended up using some of the stickers on my blue-polish-stained-netbook

London-NYC

How cute are these?

I lived in NYC before coming to London and I love (almost) al things New York.

I realized this will be of noo interest to anyone but I just sharing how “teenagy” (sorry for making up words!) I’m behaving lately…blame it on the hormones…

Hope eveyone has a wonderful weekend!

ELF Free Shipping Hauls

So after all the complaining about not being any significant offers from ELF UK for regular customers (like me!) and finding out that some offers are indeed posted on their Facebook page I went ahead and used a couple of FREE SHIPPING codes that went out early this month.

This is what I bought:

ELF November Haul

Cream eyeliner in Purple and coffee

They come with a small brush (it appears huge in the picture on their website but is actually quite small)

It’s true that it doesn’t budge, it stays put all day long. However it is quite dry do you have to apply it quite fast.  It is definitely hard for me to apply with the brush provided so I’ve tried other (longer brushes that I owe). For me it is easier to apply it with a bent liner brush.

I find the purple is more pigmented than the coffee. Didn’t buy black because it’s permanently sold out and anyway, I tend to use purple or brown much more often, anyway.

Hypershine Lip Gloss in Flirt and Berry Cherry

ELF Lip glosses

I also owe this in “Cloud Nine” which is basically a clear gloss with a wonderful coconut smell.

These colors are more pigmented but still very sheer, Flirt goes towards the pink and Berry Cherry is a bit mauveish. Both are indeed very glossy, easy to apply and leave your lips feeling veeeeery smooth. However the taste of these is kind of weird. Definitely don’t like it as much than Cloud Nine but they are great for the price (£1.50).

I did some swatches but they don’t really come out well and true to life in the picture…

Super Glossy LIp Shine Spf 15

I bought it in Mauve Luxe. Definitely the more pigmented of the glosses. It has a nicer smell/taste and also leaves your lips super shiny and smooth.

Healthy Glow Bronzing Powder

I bought it in “Luminance” which is basically just a highlighter.

Very seer with a nice shimmer and not sparkly at all.

Healthy Glow Powder

On my finger

It is actually more transparent and not as yellowish as i shows in the pictures.

Here are some swatches on my hand:

After smudging it

Without smudging it

As you can see no risk of looking like a disco ball with this powder (in fact I’m not sure if it shows that much at all…) but I have been actually using it almost everyday since I got it and al least it looks good when I apply it. Not sure it lasts that long though…

Under eye concealer and highlighter

Bought it in medium. This is quite moisturizing as well and I like the fact that it doesn’t look as cakey as the mineral concealer from Maybelline that I’ve been using these past months.

In the ELF website they syate that “Blends in easily and evenly to provide a smooth and natural finish.”. That is exactly what it does.

Haven’t really tried that much the highlighter so cannot comment that much on it. I would happily buy only the concealer without the highlighter…I’m not sure it adds that much to it, but that is just my opinion.

I also got a bag for my brushes to keep them sorted and well kept when travelling.

Shown with My Sonia Kashuk Powder Brush

It is very flat and will prevent my longer brushes to get stuck in the zips of my other make up bags. And also since it packs flat it won’t take that much space in my always crammed suitcase…

I made an order yesterday for some new Crown brushes. I hope they also fit nicely in this bag!

Have you guys bought anything form ELF laltely?

(More ELF reviews to come soon)

NYC Shopping:earrings

I just realized I still haven’t shown you some of the things that I bought in NYC while I was there in September.

I have to admit a have a real thing for earrings and I tend to buy a pair every time I travel. They always remind me of the places I’ve been to. Specially every time I go to NYC I buy some because I LOVE the shops there!

So here are some earrings that I bought in different places:

Earrings galore!

Banana Republic

I really like this store and I’m very happy that BR has now landed in the UK  (although as usual there are not as many sales over here but hey, who’s complaining?)

BR earrings

I still haven’t worn this but I like the indian style they have. It’s funny because normally I don’t go for golden earrings and all the ones that I’m showing here ARE golden. Who knew I was a golden girl?

Kenneth Cole Reaction

Kenneth Cole earrings

These were a total bargain (8$!). I bought them on the Woodbury Commons outlet (outside of Manhattan, when I also went to Target and spent a little fortune on make up and other things…)

Actually, I think I might wear these tomorrow  to go to the movies with some friends…

And last but not least…

Just a stand on the street (5th Ave, mind you)

a bit 70's, aren't they?

I’ve worn these a lot already! I quite like them!

I also bought some hair clips in Anthropologie, yet another beautiful store that is also over here (there’s one in Regent’s St)  but for some reason I never go to this store in London…

Anthropologie's hair clips

I’ve been clipping a strand of hair to one side and normally use cheap ones from H&M. I thought these look cute and good for work but also forgoing out as well.

That’s it for the moment! Have a lovely rest of the weekend!

TRAVeloGUE: Bangles

I love bangles. This summer while I was in Malaysia and Burma I had the chance to buy some nice ones, some in shops some in market stalls. Regardless, I like them all.

My new bangles (and bag to store them)

The bag is from Peter Hoe,  a shop in Kuala Lumpur about which I’ve previously posted.

Bangles from Malaysia (left) and Burma (right)

The  bangles on the left (amethyst -purple- and jade -green- beads ) are from a shop in Midvalley Mall in KL. Not sure if I kept the card… The pinkish one is from Burma. I bought in Yangon, in the Scott Market (my friends and I “got lost” in it for hours!). I’m not sure which stone it is. They made it so that it goes two rounds on my wrist. I normally wear them all together or only the ones on the left. They look very pretty, specially on tanned skin.

Since they are semiprecious stones I wear them also for more formal ocasions as well as casual ones.

Bead bangles from Burma

These are more casual. The beads are similar to the ones you see  in the rosaries of the Burmese monks. Ialso bought them at the Scott Market in Yangon. The dark brown one is made with seeds rubbed in some sort of oil (a little bit smelly). It will forever remind me of the beautiful monastery were I bought them.

And that’s another reason to like them: I like the fact that the things that I wear remind me of the wonderful places  I’ve been to.

NARS Duo in Kuala Lumpur!

OK, this is not a joke! Three posts in a row with KL on the title…

Anyway, the story is that I went to the NARS website after seeing another eyeshadow duo (Rajasthan, which is also on my to get list) being reviewed. This was back in August I think. I’m still amazed at how some of these beauty gurus get on trends way before the season really starts (just by spotting things ahead of time and buying the item by themselves, not talking here about the product being sent for review by a PR, by the way). Well, I guess that’s why they are gurus, right?

Let me get back on track…So I checked the entire collection of duos and really liked plenty of those the color combinations but there was one that caught my attention, both because of its name and color combination: Kuala Lumpur,(yeah, you guessed right!)

Here it is:

NARS eyeshadow duo in Kuala Lumpur

Just the back of the eyeshadow little black box...

It’s a beautiful golden sparkly (subtle) rose paired with  aubergine, one of my favourite eyeshadow colors .

I didn’t buy it online. I had this crazy idea of  buying it in KL when I was visiting there (see previous posts). It turned out that they didn’t have NARS at the KL airport. Also  my friend who lives there advised me against buying cosmetic brand names in the city because she thought they are much more expensive than in Europe…

So I left KL without KL…

Then  when I was leaving NY a few weeks ago,  at JFK airport with a few minutes to spare… I wandered around the duty free cosmetics area were of course they DO have NARS and thought, why not? After all the ridiculous amount of money that I had already spent in make up+clothes+gifts , just 19£ more were not going to break the bank…

To make me feel better I paid with my British credit card thinking that with the exchange rate it would feel more of a deal (which it wasn’t but anyway).

So that’s the story, KL bought in NYC.

Have used it a couple of times only so not ready for a full review but the colors are really flattering, long lasting and easy to apply which is kind of what I was expecting from this brand.

Just to wrap up, for swatches of almost all the NARS eyeshadow duos check out blushingpixie’s channel (proper link on the youtube roll on the right column). She’s the sweetest person and she swatches the duos one by one with all the patience in the world. Definitely worth checking before buying any of them.

Which NARS eyeshadow duos do you guys own? Which are your favorites?

Kuala Lumpur: shopping

Kuala Lumpur is great for shopping and getting good bargains. One of the stores that I highly recommend if you happen to go to KL is  Peter Hoe. They have 2 stores in KL, one of them is bigger and has a nice cafe/restaurant inside. They sell plenty of nice fabrics, bags, things for the house and many more…

Peter Hoe

Peter Hoe

I bought some small bags and a big beach tote as a birthday present for one of my friends (and she loved it!). The designs are gorgeous and even the wrapping paper (seen in the first picture) is something special.

It is not exactly a bargain store but their stuff  is certainly a very good value for money plus the added bonus of getting something with a pattern you know you are not going to see on almost anyone else here in Europe (apart from all my friends who also bought things there, obviously).

As I just realized it was also reviewed in one of the New York Times Travel guides:

http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides/asia/malaysia/kuala-lumpur/34503/peter-hoe-beyond/shopping-detail.html

I also bought a beautiful small fabric sort of washbag/cosmetic case that I actually used to carry things in my purse when I travel (under 10£).

My pretty Peter Hoe travel purse bag

This is what I have been carrying around the world (London-KL-Burma-KL-London-NY-London-Madrid-London, uff!) this last August:

Inside my Peter Hoe bag

Let’s see:

Honey Lozenges (Boots): it can get quite fry in the plane

Foam earplusg (Boots): great to beat some of the noise inside the aircraft

Wooden mirror (bought also in the shop of a chinese temple in KL)

After-bite roll on (damm mosquitos!)

Hair band

Anti-shine blotting paper

Tooth brush (green)+floss small brush (white/orange)

Maybelline’s anti blemishes cover up stick

Boots Band-aids and Soltan Lip Balm in SPF 15

Eye mask

Intimate wipes from Superdrug (you never know if there’s going to be toilet paper in the restrooms, I always carry them with me when I travel)

Wrapped panty liner

A copy of my passport (just in case I loose the original) and a pen

I also addto this bag  my ipod touch and headphones plus a couple more lip balms/glosses. Once it’s past security check I will add a tube of eye cream/serum (my face gets so dry) anda sample of hand cream.

It doesn’t take much but I get all the essentials in there so I don’t have to be looking around in pockets for things while flying or on the go during the trip.

That’s all about KL for now!
